In the spirit of the “Supports/Surfaces” movement with which he collaborated, Louis Cane places the utmost importance on the material element of his compositions. The swing’s structure acts as a frame in every sense. The vibrant colours contrast with the natural environment in which the piece is installed. The materials used are composites. But the subjects mark a return to figuration for the artist. This sculpture in iron and polychromatic varnished bronze is a unique piece, part of the series of Demoiselles sur une balançoire . The three burlesque-style female figures are seated on swings suspended from a giant frame. Founded in the Régis Bocquel studios, this work was acquired by the State of Monaco in 1999.
Louis Cane is a French painter and sculptor born in 1943 in Beaulieu-sur-Mer. He works in Paris and on the French Riviera. A former student of the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs in Nice, he also spent time at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He held his first solo exhibition of abstract paintings in Nice, in 1967. He reintroduced the signature to affirm the subject and stamped his canvases all-over with the words “Louis Cane - Artist Painter”. He is an active member of the “Supports/Surfaces” group, a fleeting art movement founded in the wake of the events of May ‘68. From 1973 onward, he was editor of the review Peinture, Cahiers Théoriques and devoted himself mainly to semi-abstract or figurative painting. Since 1978, he has also produced sculptures, alternating between the two modes of expression. Louis Cane’s work has been exhibited widely, in Paris, London, Chicago, and São Paulo.
