In the words of Sandro Chia, “in a way, to talk about melancholy is to talk about the artist’s condition, constantly facing that desire to do or say something, and that feeling of powerlessness we have.” The artist’s feelings are expressed in the solitary figures found throughout his work. Sandro Chia’s expressive sculpture concentrates on the figurative quality of the piece, the emotional pose of the subject, and the textured surface of the bronze. Inspired by classical Italian art, he accentuates the power of his models.
Sandro Chia an Italian painter and sculptor, born in 1946 in Florence. He graduated from the Florence School of Fine Arts in 1969. The artist explored a variety of techniques and began engraving. He became part of the Italian Transvanguardia movement, close to neo-expressionism, calling for a return to classical painting and sculpture, eschewing the cold intellectual approach espoused by conceptual art. His subjects are most often represented in motion, with bold lines. At the 2nd Biennale de Sculpture de Monte-Carlo in 1989, he exhibited Figure with Tear, a bronze piece produced in 1982. The piece Head of a Poet, cast in 1990, was presented at the 3rd Biennale de Monte-Carlo in 1991. The artist’s creations reflect the subjectivity of the artist and his freedom to express his own feelings. Sandro Chia lives and works in the United States and Italy. He is internationally successful and exhibits all over the world. His works can be found in collections at the Tate Gallery (London), the Museum of Modern Art (New York), and the Musée National d’Art Moderne Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris).
