“Colour is something very important to me. It expresses joie de vivre.” The Swiss artist’s creations are an expression of his optimism. His poetic figurations and abstract geometric shapes reveal a sense of balance and harmony. In his sculptures and paintings, he expertly discerns the geometry present in the human form and uses strong, vibrant, and complementary colours. The artist’s practice is to attribute one colour to each form, creating a dialogue of colours between the figures.
Quirin Mayer was born on 8 August 1927 in Basel, Switzerland. On completing his studies, he embarked on a career in sales and became a business executive. In 1987, he left the business world and settled in Monaco, where he developed his artistic practice. His acrylic on canvas paintings depict abstract figurative and geometric shapes. His optimism and joie de vivre shine out from his pictorial works and collages. A series of works is devoted to the circus. These paintings, with their vibrant and primordial colours, foreshadow his work with aluminium. In 1999, his first creations in lacquered aluminium went on display as part of a collective exhibition in Monaco. These weather-resistant sculptures are adapted to add poetry to the urban landscape. He continued to assemble these colourfully formed creations, which were installed in parks, gardens, and towns. A Monegasque resident, Meyer exhibited in the Principality in 2009 and 2016. He also exhibited in the South of France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, and China. He died in Zurich in 2020.
