Francisco Almansa’s sculptures are composed of interlocking geometric shapes. The artist was inspired to create this particular piece by a trip to Monaco. For Almansa, Projection dans l’espace or Proyeccion 1 symbolises the inner strength of Mediterranean countries, which he believes is perfectly encapsulated by the Principality of Monaco. The monumental piece “of our time” is made entirely in iron, a material that is almost omnipresent in our contemporary space. A gift from the artist himself, the sculpture stands on a marble pedestal, and was officially unveiled on 22 March 1983.
Born in Alicante, Francisco Almansa studied at the School of Architecture in Barcelona, and later the San Fernando de Madrid School of Fine Arts. He took part in collective exhibitions from 1980 onwards, entering the national sculpture competition in Almeria the same year, and the national plastic arts competition in Madrid in 1980 and 1981. In Paris, he exhibited at the Salons Grands et Jeunes d’Aujourd’hui, and at the 2nd Biennale Européenne de Sculpture de Normandie in Jouy-sur-Eure, in 1984. He regularly exhibits in France, including at the Georges Pompidou Centre in Paris. Almansa practises a very personal form of geometric abstract art. His pieces are those of a sculptor, in relief and ronde-bosse, created from wood and metal, in a limited range of colours, often monochrome. He works with steel, bronze, and ceramics.
