This sculpture of Prince Rainier III was officially unveiled in January 2006 at a ceremony attended by the Princely Family, on the 30th anniversary of the Monte-Carlo International Festival of Circus Arts. Marin’s work blends technology and tradition. The original image is a photograph of Prince Rainier III, transformed into a drawing with lines, points, and distortions of colour. The pieces are then reworked using paintbrush and spray to create the optical effect. The artist works with acrylic on canvas or uses a digital technique on plexiglass, wood, aluminium, or bronze to create his sculptures. Marcos Martin has a deep attachment to the Principality, and actively supports the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and numerous charities. He regularly produces portraits of Princess Grace.
Marcos Marin is a Brazilian artist born in 1967. From a very young age, he began a career as a virtuoso pianist and travelled to study music in Paris, where he settled in 1990. He later began concentrating on painting, and met Vasarely. In Montmartre, he became an assistant at a reprography studio where he learned the technique of screen printing. He is a member of the Op Art movement, specialising in optical portraits of celebrities, politicians, or major figures from classical painting such as Mona Lisa, Marylin Monroe, Salvador Dali, Brigitte Bardot, Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso, and Barack Obama. His sculptures are developed directly from his paintings, to which he adds dimension and interaction. His monumental works can now be found adorning numerous public spaces on the French Riviera and around the world. His blend of figurative and abstract art lends a timeless quality to his work. He has received numerous awards and enjoys a global reputation. He currently lives in Monaco.
