The series of neons Foreigners Everywhere takes its name from an anti-racist artists’ collective from Turin. The enigmatic title was a special inspiration for the artists of Claire Fontaine. Reproduced in neon form, it is to be found in both urban settings and exhibition spaces where it can be seen by all eyes, and deftly turns the language of marketing and consumerism back against them. The artists’ collective aims to concentrate minds on the new realities of a world in which peoples are free to move around: “Today, immigration and emigration are no longer merely economic epiphenomena. They are existential and perceptive experiences in their own right. (...) We believe that using different languages in our work is not just a gimmick. It comes from being born somewhere else and having left for no particular reason, other than simply not wanting to be at home any more.”.
Claire Fontaine is a collective founded in 2004 in Paris by an Italian artist, Fulvia Carnevale, and a British artist, James Thornhill. Borrowing her name from the popular brand of school books, Claire Fontaine declared herself a “ready-made artist”. Somewhere between Conceptual Art and Appropriationism, Claire Fontaine’s work questions western culture from the seventies to the present day. The collective is a proponent of artistic activism.
