With this sculpture, the painter Anne Quémar would appear to have ventured beyond her usual creative practice. Yet her painted Élégante au Bain still evokes her favourite theme, namely the sea. The colourful and humorous piece was produced in a philanthropic cause. In 2005, she took part in the “MonaCow Parade” alongside Folon, Arman, and other contemporary artists. The exhibition of life-size cows was followed by an auction of sculptures, with half of the funds raised going to the Association Monégasque contre les Myopathies, a charity that provides support to those affected by muscular diseases. The work was donated by the philanthropist Baroness Marianne Brandstetter, providing sterling support to Princess Grace Hospital and the fight against Alzheimer’s Disease.
Anne Quémar is a painter born in 1966 in Brittany, France. She began drawing, sketching, and watercolour painting at an early age. She created illustrated travelogues on her journeys around the world, and opened a studio on the bay of Saint Tropez. From Brittany to the South of France, the recurring themes of her work are the sea, light, and colour. Her oil paintings have a dreamlike feel. In the tradition of Edward Hopper and Bonnard, she captures the atmosphere of Mediterranean shores in a figurative style. The sea is central to her art, and she created a “line of seashells” for the fashion house Hermès. She exhibits in Paris, Miami, Courchevel, St Barts, and Dinard. Her works are to be found in numerous private collections in France and around the world.
